Think you've covered all your bases with your mailing list? Even with all the improvements to Postal Service automation, delivery of your mail could be slowed — or even sent to the wrong address — by overlooking the minor details.

Here's your checklist for expedient mailing:
  • Include proper street suffixes: Oak St. and Oak Ave. could have the same numbers for two completely different residences.
  • Nail down directionals, such as North & South: State Blvd. N could be delivered by a different post office than that handled by State Blvd. S.
  • Include secondary street indicators: Apt., Suite, Building, Floor, etc.
  • Use city abbreviation with care: Addressing something to Los Angeles with "LA" could also mean Los Alamitos, Los Altos or Los Alamos.
  • Remember the state: Sure, Cleveland is in Ohio, but there is also a Cleveland in Georgia and another Cleveland in Tennessee.
  • Get your zip codes straight: correct zip codes can be found in the lobby of your local post office, online at www.usps.com, or by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).
