A single word in a line by itself at the end of a paragraph or a short line of type at the top of a page that ends a paragraph started on the previous page.
This should be avoided to improve the quality of a the communications (particulary print) piece. Avoiding widows on websites is virtually impossible as the text layout is affected by "local settings" such as screen resolutions, window sizes and type of browser used.
